OSCE Conference on Cyber and ICT Security

UMNAI’s Angelo Dalli recently addressed the OSCE Conference on Cyber and ICT Security, presenting a talk on the critical intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

Held in Malta from 15 to 16 July, the conference aimed to raise awareness of the risks of conflict stemming from the use of Information Communication Technologies and provides an opportunity to discuss enhancing cyber resilience.  It offered a valuable platform to review the implementation of the OSCE Confidence Building Measures, discuss the risks and threats to security affecting cyberspace and how to develop cooperative responses to those challenges.

Here are the key insights from Angelo's presentation:

AI in Cybersecurity

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the cybersecurity landscape by enabling real-time analysis of vast datasets to predict and mitigate cyber threats. AI-powered predictive analytics and forensic tools are significantly enhancing our ability to respond to incidents swiftly and efficiently.

Sophisticated Threats

Cyber attackers are increasingly utilizing AI to develop more sophisticated phishing and social engineering techniques. This highlights the ongoing cat-and-mouse dynamic between cybersecurity defences and evolving threats.

Enhancing Resilience

AI is crucial for continuous monitoring and adaptive defence mechanisms. These capabilities are essential for building resilient systems that can dynamically respond to threats.

Combating Misinformation

AI tools play a vital role in detecting and countering misinformation and deepfakes. These technologies help maintain the integrity of digital information and uphold trust.

Geopolitical Context

In today's environment of hybrid warfare and rising geopolitical tensions, AI's role in identifying and mitigating asymmetric threats is critical for security and stability.

Collaborative Efforts

International cooperation and the sharing of advancements in AI-driven cybersecurity are essential for a robust collective defence. Ethical deployment of AI and the development of relevant policies are crucial to harnessing AI's benefits responsibly.
